Are Business Consultants Being Monitored? Transparency and Oversight Issues Following the 'Videogate' Scandal

The 'videogate' case has raised questions about the monitoring of business consultants in Cyprus. Although there is no official professional title of 'business consultant', professionals from various fields (economists, accountants, lawyers, etc.) provide business advice. According to lawyer Pantelis Christofides, these professionals are subject to the control of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority, especially on lobbying issues under the Transparency in Public Decision-Making Law of 2022. Additionally, there is a general obligation to avoid money laundering from illegal activities, as defined by the 2007 law. The Bar Association believes that the current legislation provides an adequate framework for control, but is considering potential improvements regarding the employment of former state officials. The discussion focuses on the need for transparency and accountability in activities that may influence public decisions.
