ECB: Why Investors Expect Interest Rate Hikes in 2026

Investors are now anticipating an interest rate hike from the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2026, following recent statements by Isabel Schnabel interpreted as a sign of tightening monetary policy. This shift in expectations has put pressure on Eurozone bonds, with their yields rising. The derivatives market now incorporates expectations for a monetary policy tightening of approximately 13 basis points by the end of next year, reversing the recent scenario of further cuts. Despite assurances from the ECB that there is no immediate policy change, markets are pricing in more aggressive scenarios. Simultaneously, attention is turning to the meeting of the US Federal Reserve, where persistent inflationary pressures may limit the scope for further monetary easing.
