Norway Exploits Middle East War to 'Unblock' Arctic Drilling

Norway is intensifying pressure on the European Union to lift the planned moratorium on oil and gas exploration in the Arctic, using as an argument the geopolitical conditions created by Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The energy uncertainty created by this situation is being used as an argument for the need to secure alternative energy sources. The European Commission is in the process of revising its Arctic strategy, which until recently provided for an international moratorium on hydrocarbon exploration in the region. Norwegian political and business circles are seeking to take advantage of the energy crisis, putting pressure on to lift the ban. Critics point out that Norway is exploiting the situation to promote its own interests, while concerns are also being raised about the environmental impact of drilling in the Arctic. Norway already covers one-third of Europe's natural gas needs and has proposed opening 70 new blocks for exploration. However, the exploitation of the region raises serious security concerns, due to its proximity to Russia and the risk of sabotage to pipelines. The European Commission, although under pressure, says its position has not changed, while the revised Arctic strategy is expected in the second half of the year.
