Commemoration Event for Archbishop Makarios III, First President of Cyprus

The Archbishop Makarios III Foundation organized a commemoration event for the first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Makarios III, at the Great Synod of the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus. The event took place on January 21, 2026, on the name day of Makarios. Professor Marios Evryviades was the speaker, while greetings were addressed by the Archbishop of Cyprus, Georgios, and the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance, Marinos Mousiouttas, representing the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. Dr. Sotiroula Vasiliou coordinated the event. The Foundation's General Director, Christos Koukliotis, emphasized Makarios' crucial role in shaping Cyprus, while Archbishop Georgios highlighted his virtues, such as foresight, militancy, and his ability to guide the people after the Turkish invasion. He also underscored his efforts to maintain Cyprus between conflicting interests. Mousiouttas praised Makarios' multifaceted contribution to all areas of Cypriot society, from the ecclesiastical and social to the economic and national. The event aimed to honor Makarios' memory and reaffirm the commitment to continue his national line, aiming for the security and freedom of Cyprus.
