Women's Day March and Rally Held in Nicosia

A march and rally were held in Nicosia by the women's movement POGO – PEO to mark International Women's Day. The event began in Freedom Square and ended in the same square, after a march along Ledra and Onasagora streets. Participants carried banners and placards demanding the implementation of the Istanbul Convention and dignity in work and life. The General Secretaries of AKEL, PEO, and POGO spoke at the event, emphasizing the need for equality and the fight against discrimination. The General Secretary of AKEL referred to the presence of British bases and the need for their abolition, as well as Cyprus's refusal to be involved in the war. It was highlighted that women work more hours overall than men, as they also take on the majority of unpaid work at home. A decent wage for women's work was requested, and support for policies that prioritize women's needs.
