New Wing of Central Prisons Completed: Cost and Features Revealed

The work to convert the open prison wing into a closed prison has been completed, a project that began in early 2024 and was completed in 11 months, at the end of November 2024. The project, implemented by the Public Works Department and the Electromechanical Services Department, included the installation of specialized security systems. The new wing features 97 cells, four dormitories, and various facilities, including a classroom, dental clinic, medical office, visiting room, gym, basketball court, kitchen, and restaurant. It can accommodate a total of 240 inmates. The cost of the construction work amounted to €1,800,000, including VAT, while the cost of the electromechanical works and security systems amounted to €2,400,000, including VAT. The President, during the inauguration, expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the project, which is part of a broader effort to upgrade the correctional system. He emphasized the need to improve infrastructure, adequate staffing, and technological upgrades, as well as to modernize the legal framework. The need to expand the prisons arose due to the increasing number of inmates, which had reached over 1000, while the available spaces were only 620. In addition, about 100 suspects and convicts were held in police detention centers, which hindered the work of the Police.
