National Crisis Coordinator Appointed - From National Guard Headquarters to Civil Protection

The Ministry of Interior is promoting the establishment of the National Civil Protection Mechanism, aiming for coordinated crisis management and strengthening the readiness of the state mechanism. The bill provides for the creation of the position of National Coordinator, who will be responsible for coordinating all involved parties during crises, including the allocation and movement of forces. The appointment of the National Coordinator is expected to be made immediately after the bill is passed by Parliament and published in the Official Gazette. President Christodoulides has already selected Lieutenant General (ret.) Georgios Tzitzikostas for the position, due to his many years of experience in strategic planning and crisis management. Tzitzikostas meets all the qualifications specified in the bill, such as integrity, prestige and professional integrity, as well as proven knowledge and experience in crisis management. His term will be determined by a presidential decree and will have a maximum duration of three months. The bill allows for the appointment of the National Coordinator from either the public or private sector. This position is expected to contribute significantly to the more effective response to emergencies and the protection of citizens.
