President of Cyprus Discusses UK Bases and Regional Stability with UK Prime Minister

The President of Cyprus held a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, at the latter's initiative, to discuss geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean. President Christodoulides emphasized Cyprus's role as a pillar of stability and a reliable partner, as well as the importance of strengthening cooperation with the UK. He informed the Prime Minister about his approach presented to the EU regarding the need for a coordinated initiative to de-escalate the crisis, highlighting the importance of multilateralism. During the discussion, President Christodoulides presented a specific proposal for discussions regarding the British Bases in Cyprus, mentioning problems and lessons learned from the recent crisis. The UK Prime Minister assured the President that the security of Cyprus is fundamental to the United Kingdom and announced the strengthening of preventative measures. Furthermore, the British Prime Minister reiterated that the British Bases in Cyprus will not be used in any offensive military operations. The discussion also included reference to the recent joint statement by the UK with other countries regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which emphasizes the strengthening of multilateralism and de-escalation. The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact, given the developments in the region and the common challenges. The Republic of Cyprus also supports the further upgrading of the EU-UK strategic cooperation, considering it an essential element for strengthening stability in the region.
