EU Approves List of 'Safe Countries' and New Asylum Procedures

The European Parliament has approved two significant amendments to European asylum regulations, aiming to accelerate the examination of applications and enhance the system's effectiveness. The amendments concern the creation of a unified list of 'safe countries of origin' at the EU level and the regulation for the application of the concept of a 'safe third country'. The list of safe countries includes countries such as Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia, allowing for faster processing of asylum applications from nationals of these countries. Asylum seekers from these countries will need to demonstrate that they are at risk of persecution or serious harm in their home country. Furthermore, the new rules facilitate the application of the concept of a 'safe third country', allowing member states to declare asylum applications inadmissible if the applicant has a substantial connection to a third country or has transited through it on their way to the EU. The rapporteurs of the regulations characterized the approval of the new rules as a significant step for EU migration policy, noting that it will lead to faster and more efficient procedures.
