EU: Israel's Annexation of West Bank Territories 'Illegal Under International Law'

The European Union condemns Israel's decision to extend its control over the West Bank, deeming it illegal under international law. EU spokesperson Anwar El Anuni stated that this move is a step in the wrong direction, given the efforts to implement the plan for Gaza. Annexing territories of the West Bank violates the Oslo Accords and may undermine the status quo of religious sites. The EU reiterates its position of not recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the territories occupied since 1967, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. Any attempt at annexation is considered a violation of international law. The EU has questions regarding the Peace Council established by Donald Trump, particularly concerning its scope and compatibility with the UN Charter. Despite reservations, the EU is ready to cooperate with the US to implement the peace plan for Gaza, provided the Peace Council functions as a transitional administration in accordance with UN resolution 2803. The EU calls on all parties to implement this resolution in its entirety and in accordance with international principles. The EU has not yet decided whether to send a representative to the meeting in Washington on February 19th. In summary, the EU strongly opposes Israel's annexation of West Bank territories, considering it illegal and harmful to the prospects for peace in the region. At the same time, it maintains a reserved stance towards the Peace Council established by Trump, but states its willingness to cooperate on implementing a peace plan that respects international law.
