Is Smell the Next Big Field in Art?

Two exhibitions in Germany demonstrate how scent is changing the way art is created, displayed, and experienced. For centuries, the sense of smell has been the most 'neglected' in art history, in a world of museums that has learned to prioritize sight. However, smell is making a dynamic return to the art world, with exhibitions such as 'The Secret Power of Scents' at the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf and 'Madre' at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin exploring the power of scent in the art experience. These exhibitions feature artworks accompanied by specially designed scents, which interact with the exhibits and create a multi-sensory experience. Smell is not considered merely a supplement, but an integral part of artistic expression, capable of conveying meaning and evoking emotions. Curator Robert Miller-Grinov argues that smell is a cultural information that can offer a more direct and embodied understanding of art. Scents can evoke memories, connect the artwork to specific contexts, and create a deeper emotional connection with the viewer.
