“We Are Still at the Beginning” with Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Says Senior Veterinary Officer

Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiadou stated that Cyprus is still at the beginning of dealing with the crisis with foot-and-mouth disease, estimating that controlling the disease could take up to six months, depending on the progress of vaccinations. The disease will be considered controlled when the virus ceases to be detected in the country. Ms. Georgiadou emphasized that the virus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly, which could lead to a dramatic decrease in milk production if left unchecked. The suspension of Cyprus's status as a foot-and-mouth disease-free country by the World Organisation for Animal Health has serious economic consequences, as other countries impose embargoes on Cypriot products. However, halloumi production is not affected due to the milk boiling process, which kills the virus. The culling of animals is done to ensure the quality and adequacy of the livestock, as the presence of the virus can lead to a vicious cycle of reduced production and economic losses. Ms. Georgiadou explained that vaccination involves a double vaccine initially and a booster subsequently, while the situation will be continuously reassessed. The speed and effectiveness of vaccinations are crucial for limiting the spread of the virus and returning Cyprus to the status of a foot-and-mouth disease-free country. The seriousness of the situation is underlined by the need for immediate and coordinated action, as the spread of foot-and-mouth disease could have devastating consequences for livestock farming and the Cypriot economy. Continuous monitoring, checks and the implementation of strict prevention measures are essential to protect livestock and prevent further spread of the disease.
