Questions Raised over Transparency in Post-Public Office Employment

Published February 11, 2026, 17:34

During a continuing session of the House Institutions Committee, issues related to transparency, incompatibility, and parliamentary oversight were raised regarding the employment of former state officials in the private sector. The review of the matter began following a proposal by MPs, focusing on the case of former Minister George Lakkotrypis, who submitted 12 applications for employment, 10 of which were approved. Concerns are being raised about the process by which the Ministry of Commerce informs the three-member Committee, as it is argued that the process is limited to the formal recording of information without substantial investigation. Also, the initial wording of the restrictions and their subsequent modification, as well as the activities of companies connected to former officials, are being questioned. The Committee requested that a letter be sent to the criminal investigator to investigate all work permits, the companies involved, and potential conflicts of interest. The speed with which cases are being examined has also been a topic of discussion, as some MPs point to the hasty nature of certain approvals. Furthermore, complaints were made about the non-provision of information to Parliament by public officials, who cite legislation that, according to MPs, does not cover them. Therefore, Parliament is considering appealing to the Constitutional Court to ensure the exercise of parliamentary control.
