Two Measures for Turkish Cypriots Ready by President – Doesn't Want Tension with Erhurman

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, is ready to announce two unilateral measures to benefit Turkish Cypriots, concerning health and the economy. However, he has first sought the positive position of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, demonstrating his desire to avoid tension in relations with the other side. The President's effort is to create a personal relationship with Mr. Erhurman before implementing the measures. The government seeks to show goodwill and contribute to improving the living conditions of Turkish Cypriots. At the same time, the arrival in Cyprus of the UN Secretary-General's special envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, is expected by the end of the month. Ms. Holguin will have contacts in Geneva, Brussels and Washington before visiting Cyprus, where she will meet with President Christodoulides. The President has proposed a new joint meeting with Ms. Holguin and Mr. Erhurman, but has not yet received a response. Ms. Holguin's visit is considered important for restarting negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
