Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak Divides Cypriot Farmers - Miscommunication and Blame Game

The management of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in Cyprus is causing strong reactions among farmers, who accuse the authorities of a lack of information and mismanagement. Farmer Pantelis Panteli accused the authorities of failing to communicate with producers and of carrying out surprise animal culls without prior notice. On the other hand, the scientific community, represented by Professor Dimitris Tsaltas, argues that the nature of the disease and European protocols require the strict measures being taken. Mr. Tsaltas emphasized that foot-and-mouth disease does not pose a risk to humans and does not affect the quality of animal products. Farmers are considering legal action, believing that there has been a lack of transparency in the crisis management.
