Lawyers Condemn British Military Bases in Cyprus as Colonial Remnant

The European Association of Lawyers for Democracy and Human Rights (ELDH) and the Cyprus Democratic Lawyers Association (CDLA) have issued a joint statement condemning the continued existence of British military bases at Akrotiri and Dhekelia as a “colonial remnant” and an “attack on the sovereignty of the Cypriot people.” The bases were imposed in 1960 as a condition for Cyprus’s independence, allowing Britain to maintain military control over parts of Cypriot territory. The lawyers reject Britain’s claims of sovereignty over the bases, considering them a violation of the right to self-determination and the rules of decolonization. The detachment of the bases was imposed under conditions of inequality and coercion, and does not constitute a product of free consent.
