OSAK Clarifies Position on Diagnostic Center Bill

The Federation of Patient Associations of Cyprus (OSAK) issued a clarifying statement regarding its positions on the bill concerning the operation of diagnostic centers, responding to recent speculation. OSAK has submitted a memorandum to the Parliament with the aim of ensuring patient safety and the quality of healthcare services. OSAK considers the physical presence of a doctor during the operating hours of the centers to be essential, however, this need varies depending on the type of examination. The presence of a radiologist is considered necessary for specialized diagnostic procedures, such as CT and MRI scans, interventional procedures, and the administration of medications. OSAK also supports the possibility of the physical presence of a doctor of another specialty to deal with any complications. For diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound, the examination must be performed by a radiologist. OSAK emphasizes that the responsibility for the correctness of the referral, the quality of the diagnosis, and the safety of patients lies exclusively with the radiologist of the center. In certain low-risk examinations, such as simple X-rays, the physical presence of a radiologist is not considered necessary, but the evaluation and scientific supervision remain the responsibility of the doctor.
