Farmers and organizations held a protest in Nicosia, outside the House of Europe, against the EU-Mercosur agreement. They delivered a petition to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and announced they would also send it to President Christodoulides and parliamentary parties. The petition calls for a review of the agreement, expressing concerns about its impact on citizens' rights and European agriculture. They believe the agreement favors large industries at the expense of small and medium-sized farmers and consumers. Furthermore, they highlight the absence of Cypriot halloumi PDO from the agreement and the potential import of products with dangerous chemicals. Finally, they question whether the agreement will benefit consumers, arguing that the benefits will be reaped by intermediaries and supermarkets. The petition is signed by a wide range of organizations, including agricultural unions, consumer organizations, and environmental groups.
