Successive trade union meetings with Konstantinos Fytiris

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, has begun a series of meetings with representatives of trade unions of the Security Forces, with the aim of mapping problems and achieving unity. The main issue raised by the trade unions is the working hours of police officers, following the issuance of a circular by the Chief of Police that caused reactions. PASYDY, the Cyprus Police Association (SAK), and the Equality trade union have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the circular, which they consider a violation of labor rights and a unilateral change in working hours. They emphasize that working hours are a hard-won right and cannot be changed unilaterally. The Equality trade union expects the Minister of Justice to clarify whether the Government agrees with the Chief's decision. The Police Spokesman, Vyronas Vyronos, countered the trade unions' objections, arguing that the circular aims to improve the functioning of the force and more effectively protect citizens. He stressed that overtime work is not being abolished, but will only be applied when there is a real need. He explained that the implementation of a 37.5-hour weekly working week was deemed feasible after the filling of organic vacancies. Mr. Vyronos stated that the Chief of Police does not seek to “fight” the police officers, but to apply rational criteria. He noted that there had been a possible abuse of overtime work, but no criminal offenses had been identified. The series of meetings of the Minister of Justice is expected to shed light on the issues and lead to solutions.
