Dialogue for Our Democracy: Addressing Party Politics in Cyprus

The Cypriot democracy, although relatively young, faces challenges and shortcomings. A significant problem is the dominance of party politics in parliament, with individuals lacking sufficient knowledge and ability influencing decisions. Party politics has deep roots in Cyprus's history, starting from the time of EOKA and the Church, and continued with the priority of ruling parties in power through clientelistic relationships. This situation has led to dissatisfaction in society, which was expressed in the last European elections with the rise of Fidias Panagiotou. A discussion about liberating the political system from party politics is necessary, but it must be done with respect for the framework of liberal, presidential parliamentary democracy. The stability of state institutions is vital for freedom and the political consciousness of citizens.
