DISY Accuses ELAM of Exploiting the Name of Glafkos Clerides

The Democratic Rally (DISY) has accused the National Popular Front (ELAM) of attempting to exploit the historical legacy of Glafkos Clerides, describing ELAM President Christos Christou's reference to him as provocative and hypocritical. DISY emphasized that Glafkos Clerides was a steadfast defender of democracy and European values, while accusing ELAM, as a "branch of the Golden Dawn," of having no limits in exploitation and opportunism. The DISY announcement stresses that linking Clerides' name to political groups expressing extreme ideologies constitutes historical distortion and an insult to his memory. DISY calls for respect for historical truth and condemns ELAM's attempt to appropriate Clerides' political and historical legacy. The DISY's criticism comes in response to statements by Christos Christou, where he mentioned the person of Glafkos Clerides, causing a reaction from the ruling party. DISY believes that ELAM does not have the right to associate Clerides' name with its own political positions and ideologies. This case highlights the political confrontation between DISY and ELAM, as well as their different approaches to historical memory and the political heritage of Cyprus.
