Affordable Housing Initiative Launched in Limassol with 70-Year History

The new mayor of Limassol, Yiannis Armeftis, has made the creation of affordable housing for students and low-income individuals a priority. As part of this effort, the construction of municipal apartment buildings in the Agios Nikolaos district and student dormitories, based on competitive designs, has begun. These initiatives aim to address the lack of decent housing, which has worsened in recent years due to rising rents. The Limassol municipality has a long history of providing affordable housing, with the first workers' housing being built in the Agios Nikolaos area 70 years ago. Mayors Ploutis Servas and Kostas Partasidis had made significant contributions to the construction of municipal housing and the city's social policy. In the past, during the mayorship of Dimitris Kontides and in cooperation with the then Minister of Interior, Andreas Christou, old houses in Agios Ioannis were demolished and new ones were built, with favorable repayment terms for beneficiaries. An agreement was also signed with KOAG to build apartments on Goethe Street, but the implementation of the project was delayed due to the economic crisis. The Limassol municipality continues to plan the creation of a wider network of affordable housing, utilizing land owned by the municipality. This effort represents a significant investment in social welfare and the right of every citizen to decent and safe housing.
