Democratic Fatigue: A Symptom of Crisis in Representative Democracy

The term "democratic fatigue" is used to describe the growing apathy and loss of confidence of citizens in representative democracy. This fatigue leads many to seek "dynamic" leaders with authoritarian tendencies and to turn to populist and extremist forces that promise simple solutions to complex problems. The rise of political indifference, combined with economic and geopolitical crises, has created a climate of insecurity and questioning. Furthermore, migration, the crisis of values, and the use of social media contribute to strengthening this phenomenon. In Cyprus, despite the relative stability of the presidential system, democratic fatigue poses a threat, especially given the ongoing occupation.
