Turkey Rejects European Mayors' Request to Visit Imprisoned Istanbul Mayor for Second Time

For the second time, the Turkish Ministry of Justice rejected a request from a delegation of European mayors to visit Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in Silivri Prison. The delegation consisted of members of Eurocities and the B40 Balkan Cities Network. Following the rejection, the delegation met with the Deputy Mayor of Istanbul and Imamoglu's wife, where they received a message from the mayor, who accused politics of manipulating justice and lacking independence. Members of the delegation expressed their concern about the state of democracy in Turkey and called for Imamoglu's release. The European mayors accused the Turkish government of political interference in the judiciary and violating democratic principles.
