“No Solution to the Cyprus Issue with Settlers and Occupation Troops”: Pavlopoulos’ Remarks During Honorary Citizenship Ceremony

Former President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, was honored as an honorary citizen of Lefkara on Tuesday evening, in an event attended by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. In his speech, Mr. Pavlopoulos emphasized that there can be no solution to the Cyprus issue with the presence of settlers and occupation troops, stressing the need for a fair and viable solution based on international and European law. Mr. Pavlopoulos stated that the Republic of Cyprus can only exist as a Federation and that the implementation of the Annan Plan would be disastrous for Cyprus. He also pointed out that Turkey should be sanctioned for occupying one-third of the Republic of Cyprus for over 50 years. The former President referred to Crans Montana, emphasizing that the Turks did not want to relinquish the right of unilateral intervention and recognize the occupation. The honorary citizenship of Mr. Pavlopoulos was a recognition of his significant contribution to Hellenism and national interests, as well as his struggle for Cyprus and his academic excellence. President Christodoulides attended the ceremony, demonstrating the government's appreciation for Mr. Pavlopoulos. Mr. Pavlopoulos expressed his gratitude to the Mayor and Municipal Council of Lefkara for the honor they bestowed upon him, as well as to President Christodoulides for his presence. He stressed that Cyprus, in the form of a Federal Republic, must be able to exercise all its sovereign rights and that justice for Cyprus is beginning to be seen.
