No Cypriot Sailors Stranded in the Strait of Hormuz

According to Charalambos Avgousti, General Secretary of OMΕPEGE-SEK, sailors who do not wish to travel to war zones have the right to disembark from their ships. The union prioritizes the safety of sailors and assures that no Cypriot sailors are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. However, there are Cypriot sailors covered by OMΕPEGE-SEK contracts who are in safe positions, even on a ship that was attacked, such as the Star Gwyneth, which sustained damage from a missile near Dubai. The Star Gwyneth sailors are safe and the ship has moved away from the area. OMΕPEGE-SEK is in contact with the Deputy Ministry of Shipping to ensure no further action is required, as no Cypriot sailors require immediate assistance. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is participating in an emergency meeting of the International Maritime Organization, focusing on the safety of sailors in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region. The Federation has revised its policy regarding war zones, including the entire Middle East. This revision came a few days after the start of the war in Iran, with some suggesting extending the zone to the Eastern Mediterranean, which was ultimately avoided due to the lack of incidents in the area. The inclusion of the Eastern Mediterranean would have significant economic consequences. However, there is a possibility that the region will be added to the danger zones if the war continues for a long time. Mr. Avgousti stressed that the safety of sailors is the highest priority and that those who do not wish to travel to dangerous areas have the right not to do so.
