Drousiotis Doesn't See Meat Shortage - Imports May Happen to Control Prices

The President of the Consumers Association, Marios Drousiotis, estimates that there will be no meat shortage in the market despite the culling of 13,000 animals due to foot-and-mouth disease. However, he predicts a possible increase in meat imports to control prices, especially for Easter. He states that the culled animals represent about 1-1.5% of the total livestock population. He also estimates that there will be difficulty in the production of PDO halloumi due to reduced milk production, but there are sufficient stocks in dairy factories. The Executive Secretary of the Pan-Cypriot Supermarkets Association, Andreas Chatzhiadamou, states that the necessary steps will be taken, possibly including imports, to avoid a significant increase in prices.
