Damianos: Ukraine a Top Priority for Cypriot EU Presidency

Cyprus, holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, has placed continued support for Ukraine as a top priority. Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Michalis Damianos told the UN General Assembly that Cyprus remains committed to promoting broad EU support for Ukraine, including humanitarian aid, economic support and Ukraine's European aspirations. Mr. Damianos stated that EU member states gathered in memory of the victims, in solidarity with those who continue to suffer and with a renewed sense of responsibility to uphold the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. International condemnation followed the recent attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which have deprived civilians of access to essential services such as electricity, heating and water. The Minister of Energy emphasized that for Cyprus, which has experienced the consequences of invasion and occupation, the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity are existential. Cyprus reaffirmed its support for Ukraine's territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Finally, Mr. Damianos reiterated Cyprus’s commitment to achieving a sustainable peace in Ukraine and welcomed diplomatic efforts to end the war, stressing that any negotiation must ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
