Trial Begins for Tragic Death of 15-Year-Old Stylianos: Police Testify About Mother's Reports of Abuse

The trial for the suicide of 15-year-old Stylianos has begun with testimony from police officers who received reports from his mother about poor living conditions and domestic violence. In 2010, the mother reported to the Pera Chorio Nisou police station that she wanted to divorce her husband, citing poor living conditions, lack of social life, and constant trips to her husband's livestock pen. The officer testified that the mother had already contacted Social Welfare Services and did not wish to file a formal complaint, possibly seeking additional support from the Welfare Office or financial assistance. During the testimony, no signs of abuse were reported on the mother. The officer stated that the woman appeared to be seeking to record the report with the Police to avoid leaving the marital home. The defense, through the lawyers of the father and mother, examined the witness, attempting to clarify the circumstances and actions that followed the report. The case highlights the moral responsibilities of Cypriot society and the potential shortcomings in protecting children and women facing domestic violence. Eleven people are accused in court, with two having admitted to some of the charges. The trial is expected to shed light on the circumstances that led to the tragic outcome of 15-year-old Stylianos' life and to judge the criminal responsibilities of the accused. The case has caused great emotion in Cyprus and has questioned the effectiveness of mechanisms to protect vulnerable groups.
