Mayor of Nicosia: Metropolitan Park of Western Nicosia and SOPAZ Project on Track

The Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, announced that the Metropolitan Park of Western Nicosia and the project at SOPAZ are progressing on track for implementation. The tripartite Committee (Government, Nicosia Municipality and Chamber of Commerce) will meet in March to make decisions regarding the park, while the EOA is ready to undertake the projects of rainwater retention ponds at the State Exhibition and under the Nicosia Airport. The cost of the project is being updated and is expected to be included in the state budget. This is a significant flood protection project for Engomi and Agios Domitios, which has been discussed for decades. The meeting of the Interior Committee confirmed the consensus between the stakeholders. The feasibility study for SOPAZ has been completed, paving the way for the implementation of the Metropolitan Park. The cost estimate for the immediate restoration and demolition works in the area has also been completed. An architectural competition will be announced for the landscaping of the area, while the Public Works Department is evaluating the kiosks proposed by the Municipality for preservation. In addition, the assessment for covering the energy needs of the park with green energy has been completed, and the questionnaire for the revision of the Local Plan has been submitted, explicitly including the Metropolitan Park as a vital project. There is also a proposal for the utilization of the Greece Pavilion and Hall A for the Museum of Contemporary Art.
