Greenland Parties Reject Trump's Acquisition Interest: “We Don’t Want to Be Americans”

Greenland's parties have strongly opposed the potential acquisition of the island by the United States, emphasizing that they “do not want to be Americans.” This reaction comes in response to statements by US President Donald Trump, who had mentioned that the US would consider acquiring Greenland, “the easy way or the hard way.” The leaders of the five parties represented in the local parliament stressed that they want to remain Greenlandic and not American or Danish, emphasizing that the future of Greenland should be decided by the Greenlandic people themselves. They also called on the US to stop disrespecting their country. Trump had stated that acquiring Greenland was necessary to prevent potential expansion by Russia or China in the region, as well as to ensure American dominance in the Arctic. He argued that the US must own Greenland and defend it. The case has provoked strong reactions both in Greenland and in Denmark, which has sovereignty over the island. Denmark has categorically rejected the possibility of selling Greenland to the US.
