Reduced Water Supply in Nicosia Due to Desalination Plant Maintenance

The president of the Nicosia Water Board, Konstantinos Giorgatzis, announced a 20-25% reduction in water supply to the Nicosia area due to maintenance work at the Dekelia desalination plant, which will take place from today until Thursday. He assured that all necessary measures have been taken to prevent problems for consumers. He also criticized the issuance of legal notices for minor offenses while the state does not take measures for proper water management. Mr. Giorgatzis proposed the implementation of a pricing policy that would charge consumers who use excessive amounts of water more, arguing that such a policy could have saved significant amounts of water in the past. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for the government to decide on a clear strategy for water management, as the planned cuts will worsen the condition of the old water supply network, increasing water losses. In summary, the priority is to ensure water supply despite the maintenance work, but a long-term strategy is also needed to improve water management and upgrade the network.
