President of Cyprus to Address MEPs on EU Cohesion

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, will address MEPs on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for cohesion and strength within the European Union. His speech will highlight the close cooperation between the Cypriot Presidency and the European Parliament as a prerequisite for promoting important European policies and legislative initiatives. The President will underscore the European responsibility of Cyprus, as the southeasternmost point of the EU and the only European capital under occupation, focusing on a Europe that strengthens its strategic autonomy, resilience, and competitiveness in the face of geopolitical challenges. The central idea of his intervention will be that true European autonomy requires internal strength and cohesion, the ability to protect its citizens, borders, and interests, alongside outward-looking policies, alliances, and cooperation based on the principles of international law and dialogue. He will emphasize the importance of adherence to international law and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, with reference to the EU's support for Ukraine. The President will present five interconnected pillars, focusing on autonomy through security, defense, and preparedness, as well as economic and water security.
