Why the Flu is 'Crushing' Children This Year. Days of Danger for Complications

This year's flu season is characterized by an early start and prolonged, intense circulation of viruses, with children being the most vulnerable population group. A death of a child from influenza A has been recorded in Cyprus, while many children and adults continue to be hospitalized. Experts identify a gap in immunity, with children being the 'weakest link' due to their close contact in nurseries and schools. Children's hospitals in Greece are recording hundreds of visits daily from minors with the flu, with approximately 15 children requiring hospitalization per shift and two needing intubation last week. The flu remains high in the adult population as well, with over 600 hospital admissions last week and 23 admissions to ICUs, resulting in seven deaths. However, a slight downward trend has been observed in the last ten days, which experts are closely monitoring. Professor of Epidemiology Dimitris Paraskevis states that this year's flu season is unusual, with the onset of viral circulation occurring earlier than expected and the circulation being continuous. While the viral load is slightly decreasing in adults, the circulation of the flu in children remains unabated. According to the Hellenic Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases, 30-50% of preschool and school-aged children become ill with the flu each year. The flu vaccine is the most effective measure of protection and is recommended for healthy infants and children aged 6 months to 5 years, as well as children and adolescents over 5 years of age with chronic illnesses.
