Yiannakis Gavriel: It's a Great Honor to Be on AKEL's Ballot, But Also a Great Responsibility

Yiannakis Gavriel, a member of parliament for AKEL, expressed his honor at being on the party's ballot, but also the responsibility that comes with representing AKEL in parliament. He strongly criticized the government, accusing it of using communication tactics instead of providing real solutions to problems. Specifically, he referred to the handling of foot-and-mouth disease, the Water Project, and wildfires. Mr. Gavriel criticized the European approach to foot-and-mouth disease, believing that the policy of mass culling of animals is not a solution for Cyprus. He argued that the EU is experimenting with Cypriot data, without taking into account the country's specificities, and that culling is not a sustainable solution. Regarding the province of free Famagusta, the MP mentioned the stagnation of works on the Liopetri River, the lack of staff at the province's hospital, and the cancellation of hotel reservations due to government handling of the start of the war in Iran. Mr. Gavriel stressed the need for immediate vaccination of animals and the cessation of culling, as well as the need for control in the occupied territories to prevent the recurrence of the disease. He expressed his concern about the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on the Cypriot economy and the need for responsible and flexible economic policy.
