Georgiades: Cypriot Presidency Emphasizes Eastern Mediterranean

The President of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Charis Georgiades, stated that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU is giving particular emphasis to the Eastern Mediterranean region. The statement was made during an online meeting with the President and members of the Association of Former Members of the European Parliament. Mr. Georgiades expressed Cyprus's appreciation for the solidarity shown by EU member states after the attack on the British Akrotiri base, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and collective support. He stressed the need for a more effective and competitive Europe, with less bureaucracy and more support for areas such as research and investment. Mr. Georgiades referred to Cyprus's role as a bastion of the EU in the region, highlighting its contribution to security and stability. Drawing a parallel between the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he stressed that Cyprus remains a stable and reliable partner of the EU. The President of the Association, Klaus Hänsch, stated that maintaining the unity of the EU is the most complex issue that the Cypriot Presidency is called upon to manage, through collective action for a better future for its citizens. Mr. Georgiades expressed the view that Turkey cannot be considered a factor of stability in the region.
