Georgiou: The Left Accuses the EP of Turning its Back on Borrowers

MEP Giorgos Georgiou denounces that the European United Left group voted against the report of the special committee on Housing, as it considers that housing is approached as a commodity rather than a social right. He points out that amendments aimed at protecting borrowers were rejected, such as the possibility for courts to examine the abusive nature of contracts ex officio and the suspension of foreclosures during the evaluation. Georgiou accuses the political groups of the EPP, Socialists, and Conservatives of acting as bodyguards for banks and credit acquisition companies, while criticizing the stance of Cypriot MEPs from DISY, DIKO, and ELAM. Furthermore, he denounces the rejection of amendments for the write-off of debts after the foreclosure of a primary residence and the imposition of a property tax to finance a socially just housing policy.
