German Media: Trump Pushing Scholz to His Limits

The behavior of Donald Trump, particularly the threat of additional tariffs on Germany, has pushed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to his limits, according to German media. Despite initially understanding Trump's actions, Scholz is reportedly concerned that the US President will use American aid to Ukraine as leverage in his dispute over Greenland. At the EU Summit, Scholz is expected to call for restraint from European leaders in order not to jeopardize the possibility of reaching an agreement with the US. At the same time, the possibility of the EU using its trade “weapon” against the US is being discussed, imposing retaliatory tariffs or excluding American companies from tenders. However, there is also domestic pressure in Germany for a tougher stance against Trump, as many believe that Scholz's current approach is too tolerant. The Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper points out that Scholz is increasingly facing expectations that Trump's offensive and dangerous behavior will no longer be tolerated. Despite the tensions, Scholz has expressed hope to meet with Trump soon, possibly at the World Economic Forum in Davos. At the same time, Germany is considering the US invitation to participate in a “Peace Council” for the Gaza Strip, but has not yet decided whether to accept, waiting to coordinate with its partners.
