Germany: Tight Race Between CDU and SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate

An election is being held today in Rhineland-Palatinate, where the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is attempting to overthrow the Social Democrats' (SPD) decades-long dominance. The latest polls show a very close race between the two candidates. The election is particularly significant for the CDU after its defeat in Baden-Württemberg by the Greens. The CDU leads with 29% against 28% for the SPD, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is in third place with 19%. The incumbent Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer of the SPD appears more popular in the event of a direct election. The most likely outcome is the formation of a grand coalition between the SPD and CDU.
