Germany Explains Why It Won't Militarily Support Cyprus

Germany will not contribute militarily to the security of Cyprus, not due to indifference or reluctance, but due to a pre-determined “division of labor” with its NATO allies. Defense Ministry spokesperson Natalie Jenning explained that Germany has taken responsibility for the eastern flank of NATO and German forces are already committed to defensive projects in Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and the northern flank. Article 42 of the EU Treaty has not been activated, as Cyprus addressed other partners bilaterally. Germany already has two frigates in the region, contributing to monitoring the situation.
