Attorney General: Important Initiative by MPs to Limit Immunity

The Attorney General, George Savvides, expressed his satisfaction with the initiative of the Legal Committee to bring the issue of limiting parliamentary immunity back for discussion. The bill, which has been pending for years, concerns the determination of the rights that must be protected during the exercise of parliamentary duties. Mr. Savvides described the initiative of the MPs as particularly important and stressed the need to create a framework acceptable to the Parliament. The possibility of separating offenses was discussed, so that prosecution for offenses not related to parliamentary work could proceed without a prior request for lifting immunity. The Legal Service has been made available to the Committee to contribute to the process.
