AKEL General Secretary: No New Developments Foreseen in Cyprus Talks

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, stated that no new developments are foreseen in the Cyprus issue as things stand today, and that Turkey has not expressed readiness to resume negotiations. The comments were made at an event honoring veterans of AKEL Larnaca and celebrating the party's centenary. Mr. Stefanou mentioned that they are awaiting the results of the meeting between President Christodoulides and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, but currently there are no indications of anything new, as the UN is awaiting the parliamentary elections in Cyprus. He also emphasized that Turkey is sticking to its position for a two-state solution. The AKEL General Secretary stressed the need for initiatives and proposals from the Cypriot side to convince that it is ready to continue negotiations from where they left off, as well as to promote Confidence-Building Measures. In his speech, he referred to the history and struggles of AKEL for the freedom of Cyprus and the overthrow of colonialism. In addition, Mr. Stefanou honored the members who joined AKEL in 1976, in a difficult period after the Turkish invasion, emphasizing their selflessness and contribution to society.
