France Passes Bill Banning Social Media for Children Under 15

The French Parliament has passed a bill banning access to social media for children under the age of 15, with the aim of protecting their mental health. President Macron welcomed the bill as an important step, emphasizing that children's brains should not be exploited by platforms. France follows Australia, which had already introduced a similar ban for children under 16. The bill provides for a ban on creating new accounts from September 2026 and the implementation of age verification for existing accounts by January 2027. Educational platforms and messaging apps such as WhatsApp are excluded. This move comes after warnings from the National Health Security Agency (Anses) about the negative effects of social media on the mental health of adolescents.
