UK Prime Minister: 'No' to Offensive Operations from Bases in Cyprus

The President of the Republic of Cyprus held a telephone conversation with the British Prime Minister as part of regular contacts on geopolitical developments. The President of Christodoulides emphasized Cyprus's role as a pillar of stability and the need to strengthen cooperation with the United Kingdom, as well as the need for a coordinated initiative to de-escalate the crisis in the region, through multilateralism. The British Prime Minister agreed with this approach and referred to a joint statement with other countries on strengthening multilateralism and de-escalation. The issue of British Bases in Cyprus was also discussed, with President Christodoulides presenting a proposal for discussions on problems and lessons learned from the recent crisis. The British Prime Minister assured that the security of Cyprus is fundamental to the United Kingdom and that preventive measures will be strengthened. He also reiterated that the British Bases will not be used for any offensive military operations. The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact, in view of developments in the region and common challenges. The conversation highlighted the importance of maintaining close cooperation between Cyprus and the United Kingdom, as well as the need for coordinated efforts to promote stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
