UK Considers Options for Deploying Mine Countermeasures in the Gulf

The UK is considering options for deploying military forces to the Gulf following an escalation of Iranian attacks on ships. Defense Secretary John Healey stated that London already has autonomous mine countermeasures systems in the region and is considering deploying additional forces alongside its allies. The announcement comes after reports that Iran has laid approximately 12 mines in the Strait of Hormuz, complicating navigation. The last British minesweeper, HMS Middleton, returned to the UK on March 1st as it no longer met safety standards. Healey described the situation as a “significant escalation” by Tehran, emphasizing that it is a violation of international law with implications for oil prices and the cost of living. On Wednesday, two tankers were attacked in an Iraqi port by boats with explosives, while another three ships were also attacked in the Gulf. The US has sunk 16 Iranian minesweepers in response to these actions. The UK is considering all options to protect its interests and ensure the safety of navigation in the region.
