UK Court Deems Ban on Palestine Action Unlawful

The High Court in London ruled the British government's ban on the pro-Palestinian organisation Palestine Action unlawful, although the ban remains temporarily in place as the government announced it will appeal the decision. The organisation was prohibited in July due to “direct action” against defence companies linked to Israel, such as Elbit Systems and the Brize Norton airbase, with damages estimated at around one million pounds and one police officer injured. Judge Victoria Sharp acknowledged that Palestine Action promotes its political goals through criminal activities, but deemed the ban a disproportionate interference with freedom of expression. Despite the ruling, Home Secretary Suella Braverman indicated an intention to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal, while the police are focusing on gathering evidence of support for the organisation. The ban had drawn criticism from civil liberties groups and personalities such as Sally Rooney.
