“Short Circuit” in Water Supply: Why Larnaca Desalination Plant is Racing Against Time

Published February 13, 2026, 09:36

The viability of the Larnaca desalination plant is under scrutiny due to the age of its infrastructure and its geographical location, which creates technical challenges. The situation is worsened by the plant's proximity to the Salt Lake, which causes corrosion in the pipes. The main problem is that the high-voltage cables are located under the airport's landing strip, due to the airport's expansion after the cables were installed. The EAC is unable to intervene immediately in the event of a failure, as special permits are required from Civil Aviation. The proposed solution is to switch to 22,000 Volts so that the network can withstand greater loads with less stress. However, the possibility of relocating the cables around the airport is also being considered, although this would be more expensive and technically complex. With the tourist season approaching, there is great concern about potential failures in desalination, as these could cause problems with the water supply to Larnaca, Nicosia, and Free Famagusta. The priority is to ensure an uninterrupted water supply during the summer.
