Cyprus Parliament Approves Gender Equality Law

The House of Representatives of Cyprus has passed the “Gender Dimension Integration Law of 2025,” establishing a comprehensive framework for integrating gender equality into the public sector. The bill was passed with 28 votes in favor and three abstentions. The law requires relevant authorities to consider the different impact of policies and actions on women and men, with the aim of effectively implementing equality. Amendments made by the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice and Public Order provide for the submission of the annual report of the Gender Equality Commissioner to the relevant parliamentary committee for information and restrict the issuance of decrees, preferring regulations for legal certainty. During the debate, concerns were expressed regarding the effectiveness of the law and the mandatory nature of its provisions, as well as questions about the role of the Gender Equality Commissioner.
