Parliament Discusses Replacement of Refugee Law

Discussion has begun in the Parliamentary Committee on Interior regarding the replacement of the existing Refugee Law, with the aim of regulating the procedures for managing migration and asylum, in accordance with the provisions of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum. Committee President Aristos Damianou stated that the new law is extensive (240 pages) and the views of relevant services, ministries and civil society organizations will be examined. The discussion will continue with the next composition of the Parliament, due to its dissolution. There is a general understanding of the need to revise the law, but there are also comments from rights organizations and the Children's Commissioner regarding the protection of the rights of minors and unaccompanied children. The objections concern ensuring that national regulations are consistent with Cyprus's obligations, especially regarding unaccompanied children. The intention is to submit a text that maintains a balance between obligations and the rights of those involved. The law covers the entire process, from arrival to the return of migrants and asylum seekers. MP Sotiris Ioannou of ELAM emphasized that the term “refugees” should not be used for Cypriots displaced from the occupied territories, but for those who arrive illegally in Cyprus.
