Cyprus Parliament Approves Open University Budget Amid Concerns for its Future

The House of Representatives approved the budget of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) for 2026, amounting to €19.470.000. The budget is balanced and funded primarily by state grants, tuition fees, and other revenues. During the discussion, concerns were raised by MPs from various parties regarding the funding and development of the institution. MP Christos Christofides (AKEL) accused the government of downgrading the OUC, pointing to cuts and a lack of strategic planning. He also expressed concerns about competition from other universities offering distance education. AKEL voted for the budget with protest. MP Georgios Karoullas (DISY) described the budget as "stagnant," emphasizing that the vision for the OUC remains unchanged compared to other universities receiving increased funding. He expressed hope for a strengthened budget in the future. MP Panikos Leonidis (DIKO) highlighted the important role of the OUC and urged the Ministry of Education to strengthen its programs, particularly in the field of Greek culture. The Parliamentary Spokesperson of DIPA, Alekos Tryfonidis, expressed strong concern about the state of the institution, stating that it is "on life support" and calling for immediate support.
